6 Healthy dog treats your pup will love this summer

Treating your pup with a delicious snack is a fantastic way to bond with them and show your love in a way they can appreciate and understand. It’s also a practical way to reward and encourage good behavior.

Similar to our own snacking, there can be too much of a good thing and you should be careful not to over treat your dog. As a general rule snacks and treats should never make up more than 10% of your dog’s daily calories.

We recommend 6 of the best healthy, low calorie dog snacks that your pup will love and you can feel great about.

Apples are a fantastic treat for dogs of all ages – full of natural fibre & vitamins and low in fat they are a super healthy treat that most dogs will devour. Dogs love the taste and texture and as an added bonus a crunchy apple slice will help dental hygiene. Be sure to slice into appropriate sized pieces for the size of your dog and always remove the core and seeds as they contain trace amounts of cyanide which can build up and poison your dog if consumed regularly.

Bananas are an amazing low calorie treat for dogs – absolutely chock full of vitamins and minerals they are great for energy and heart & digestive health.

Pro tip for Summer: try freezing some slices – it will retain the natural goodness and add a crunchy layer of fun and excitement for your pup.

Another super healthy and crunchy treat that your dog will love. High in vitamins A, C, K, beta-carotene and potassium – carrots pack a big nutritional punch whilst still being low in calories. As an added bonus, although it won’t replace a good brush, the crunchy texture will assist dental hygiene and help remove plaque build-up on the surface of your dog’s teeth.

An Aussie summertime favorite - be sure to spare your dog a few from the next punnet and they will love you for it. A superfood that’s easy to eat and rich in disease fighting antioxidants.

High in vitamins that will assist with immune health and energy and super low in calories – celery can’t be beaten for a diet conscious treat. Don’t be surprised if your dog takes it away somewhere special to savour – they love the texture and gnawing on the stringy sticks.

A super low calorie and tasty summer snack that is made up of mostly water – a great way to help keep your dog hydrated on hot days. Watermelon contains potassium and vitamins that will keep them chasing their tails long after you’ve retired to the pool.
Be sure to remove the seeds and rind for your pooch as they can cause intestinal blockages and upset tummies.
